Why should I visit Salalah?
Nestled along the southern coast of Oman lies a hidden gem waiting to be explored – Salalah. Renowned for its lush greenery, breathtaking mountains, and rich historical sites. Salalah offers an enchanting blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. If you’re seeking a destination that combines relaxation with adventure, Salalah is the perfect choice.
When is the best time to visit Salalah?
The best time to visit Salalah largely depends on your preferences and what experiences you seek. The peak time to travel to Salalah is during summer months from June to September, this is when Salalah experiences Khareef or monsoon season.
Off Peak Travel to Salalah
For travelers looking to bask in warm beach weather without the crowds, venturing to Salalah during the off-season can be a delightful choice. Out of season travel, typically from spring to early autumn, offers pleasantly warm temperatures ideal for relaxing at the beach and pool as well as not being too hot for outdoor activities. An extra benefit of shoulder season travel of course, fewer tourists.
We visited Salalah during Spring break in April and loved the weather. It was hot, sunny, dry and the perfect temperature for enjoying plenty of beach and pool time without being too hot to explore the outdoors.
Khareef Season
During June to September, Salalah experiences a magical transformation during the Khareef season, it’s an experience apparently not to be missed. During this time, the monsoon brings refreshing rains, turning the dry landscape into a lush green paradise. Whilst the Khareef season provides relief from the scorching summer heat elsewhere in Oman, it’s important to note that it can also be an incredibly busy time for tourism. Hotels often book up quickly with prices rising too. Experiencing Khareef season is said to be one of the best things to do in Salalah. We will visit one day, and report back!
Getting around Salalah
If you have flown into Salalah airport then the easiest thing to do is hire a car. This will enable you to explore Salalah at your own pace. Petrol in Oman is cheap so it is worth hiring a 4×4 to ensure that you can comfortably visit all of the places mentioned. We always use
However, if you are looking for a guided tour you can find many options on Viator and Get Your Guide where they will collect you from the hotel and take you to see the main sites.
Things to do in Salalah: East Salalah
Wadi Darbat Waterfalls
When it comes to the best things to do in Salalah, a visit to the region’s enchanting waterfalls, including the renowned Wadi Darbat, is an absolute must. While Salalah’s Khareef season undoubtedly enhances them with lush greenery and increased water flow, many waterfalls retain their charm throughout the year. Even outside the Khareef season, some of the smaller waterfalls of Salalah are worth visiting, offering a tranquil oasis amongst the dry mountains of the Omani landscape.
Even though the main waterfall of Wadi Darbat was dry during April, as we drove higher up the mountain to some of the upper levels we were still able to see some beautiful areas. There is plenty of parking and you can get out of the car and spend some time admiring the water and views.
Jabal Samhan Mountain
Arguably, one of the best things to do in Salalah is visit the Jebel Samhan mountain range. Offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and coastline, the views from the top are simply incredible. If you are into hiking there are many trails to discover and hikes to go on. We didn’t do any hiking this trip as it is a little hot in April but we will definitely be back to try some.
Our guide brought us to the top of the mountain by car where there is a viewing area that is definitely worth a visit. Be careful with young kids as there aren’t any barriers in place and they can get close to the edge if unattended.
Baobab Trees Salalah
On the drive down from Jabal Samhan you will reach a green area filled Baobab Trees. These trees are rare and threatened with extinction. Huge trees that are unique to desert areas as their trunks become filled with water and desert dwellers could break into them and drink water in days gone by.
Shawny Waterfall Salalah
Very close to the baobab trees is a short, downhill road where you will find Mirbat Nature Waterfall Pool and Shawny Waterfall. This waterfall was dry in April, however the pool was beautiful and well worth a stop to admire and have a few moments of peace before continuing on the road.
No Gravity Point Salalah
This mystical spot, located amidst the mountains of Salalah, offers a chance to experience a momentary escape from the laws of gravity. When you get to this strange spot, the laws of gravity seem to disappear.
Our guide brought us to this spot, where he stopped the car and turned off the engine. Took the handbrake off and we started to roll uphill. We couldn’t believe it! My boys were not entirely convinced and believed something else to be going on. So, they got out of the car and poured water on the road, which then rolled uphill as well. Make sure to stop here when on an East Coast tour of Salalah.
Tarqah Beach
The popular Tarqah beach runs alongside the main road leading back to Salalah. Tarqah Castle is a popular tourist spot on the trail, a small fort castle in the town. We decided against visiting the castle after having recently visited some large forts like Jabreen Castle and Bahla Fort in Nizwa. Our guide then took us to Tarqah Cliff which gave a stunning view over the cliffs and bay of Tarqah. As well as, up the coastline back to Salalah. You may even spot sharks or dolphins swimming below the cliffs in the beautiful, clear water.
Things to do in Salalah: West Salalah
The West Side of Salalah is famous for its rugged landscape and beautiful coastline and is full of things to do in Salalah.
Full disclosure – we didn’t make it to West Salalah during this trip, we will be back to explore further. However these are the notes we made and the places we want to visit next time.
Mughsail Beach and Blow Holes
Mughsail Beach is the most popular beach to visit on the West Coast, with its golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs rising from the sea. But what truly sets this beach apart are the awe-inspiring blow holes that punctuate the coastline. Witness the raw power of nature as waves crash against the cliffs, sending plumes of water soaring into the air.
Al-Marnif Cave
Hidden amidst the cliffs near Mughsail Beach is Al-Marnif Cave. This natural wonder boasts spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, made even more amazing by the light entering the cave.
Fazayah Beach and Hidden Beach Salalah
These two beaches are further down the coast from Mughsail Beach. It is a little bit more difficult to get to and you will need a 4×4, however the views are worth it. A pristine stretch of coastline awaits.
Khawr Ruri
For nature enthusiasts, a visit to Khawr Ruri is a must. This wetland reserve is home to a diverse array of bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Grab your binoculars and look out for flamingos, herons, and other migratory birds in the lagoons and mangrove forests.
Things to do in Salalah: Al Baleed Archaeological Site
History buffs will be captivated by the cultural heritage of Salalah, particularly at the Al Baleed Archaeological Site. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a glimpse into Oman’s ancient past, with remnants of a once-thriving port city dating back to the 8th century. Explore the well-preserved ruins, including the impressive Al Baleed Palace, and learn about the region’s maritime history and trade routes. Wander around the museum and afterwards take a guided golf buggy around the Archaeological site.
If you are staying at the wonderful Anantara Al Baleed Salalah Hotel you can take a small boat. It leaves directly from the hotel, through the lagoon directly to the site.
