Parasailing on Patong beach at sunset – wow!
We stayed in Patong for 10 nights, for the first 5 nights we hit the beach at sunset with a couple of cans of Singha listening to a great DJ from ‘Colourful Phuket’ playing a sunset set and watching squealing people take to the skies parasailing.
Phil echoing nightly, ‘I would never do that!’ and me retorting with ‘I’m going to do it!’ turned into Elis (aged 5) declaring ‘I’ll do it with you Mummy!’, well that was me sold. If my 5 year old wanted to do it then there was nothing going to stop me from doing it with him. I have done it a couple of times in my twenties in Majorca and Turkey but the opportunity of doing it with my 5 year old was another level of experience.
There are plenty of people on the beach selling the experience so it’s not hard to find where you need to go, just look out for the parasail. The cost was 1800 baht total for me and Elis (200 dhs or £40). We headed for a pre-drink in Terrazzo opposite the beach first, a great happy hour! A couple of ‘Dutch courage’ drinks for me and a few pre-journey toilet breaks then headed over to the beach.
Once we had approached the parasail workers and said we wanted to do it, it all happened pretty quickly – there were about 3 guys around us strapping us in and making sure we were secure when a small crowd started to gather to gawp at the brave little kid about to fly!
Just this and us in the sky! No turning back now Someone’s excited
Me and Elis were attached the parasail, there was no real talk through what was going to happen except ‘hold this’, ‘run’ and ‘when flying you can let go’ – no chance! Having watched at least 30 people doing it over the last week I wasn’t worried so just went with it. The guy came up behind me and started shouting run, run, run and that was it – we were off and up in the sky. A few delighted/nervous screams and we settled into it; in awe of the sunset, the beautiful beach and the incredible feeling of flying.
Elis was a complete superstar, he chatted the whole way around whilst we tried to spot Daddy and Dylan who were ‘like little ants’ and took in the amazing views. An unforgettable experience – I just tried not to think too much about the guy behind me who wasn’t strapped in at all and could fall and plop into the sea at any time leaving me and Elis dangling above Patong, life is for living right?!
Off we go Up up and away That’s us!
Coming back down we landed easily on the sand and just had to run a little way and we stopped. Just as quickly as we were attached, we were detached and dancing around the beach our adrenaline and heartbeats racing.
We did it!
A once-in-a-lifetime experience that me and Elis will definitely not forget. You can see videos over on our Instagram @thewhitesindubai on the ‘Patong’ highlight.
