Karon view point is actually closer to Kata Beach than Karon Beach, despite the name. It is a beautiful outlook overlooking Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach and even over to Patong Beach.
How to get to Karon View Point
The easiest way to get to Karon View Point, or Kata beach viewpoint as it is also known, is by motorbike or tuk tuk. As we were travelling Phuket with kids the simplest way for us was by tuk tuk. It only takes about 15 minutes to drive up the steep hill from Kata Beach. Pre-arrange a price with the tuk tuk driver for a return trip. You should be able to get a Whatsapp number and just send him a message when you are ready to come back.
When is the best time of day to go to Karon View Point?
Sunset is definitely the best time of day to visit Karon viewpoint. You will get a clear view of all the beaches which look magnificent during this time of time. There is nothing better than watching the sky turn pink and fall down over the sea. There are plenty of quiet places to choose from to watch it.
What is in Karon View Point?
As you drive up the hill you will pass by some houses and then find some cafes and restaurants at the top. If you go past these you will eventually reach the actual Kata viewpoint. Karon View Point is the highest point up from Kata Beach. When you arrive, there is a set of stairs and a mural looking building where you can look over the 3 beaches.
It is a lovely green, leafy spot full of trees and birds. There are binoculars where you can look out further across Phuket island. Out in the sea the sun starts to set next to the island of Ko Pu, a typical Thai island offering picturesque views.
If you want to just have a look around and then head for sundowners or dinner just ask the tuk tuk driver to wait for 20minutes whilst you explore. He will then bring you a bit further down the hill for dinner.
Is there anywhere to eat at Kata View Point?
Yes there are a few cafes and restaurants at the top. The tuk tuk driver will bring you back down and probably suggest his favourite place. We stopped in the most local looking place, recommended by our driver, which is what we like. The Karon view point restaurant had lots of motorbikes parked up outside and was called ‘After Beach’. The restaurant has a huge terrace overlooking the smaller bay of Kata Noi (‘little Kata’) and still offering further views of Kata Beach, Karon Beach and Patong Beach.
The restaurant has a very extensive menu with every Thai dish in every combination you can think of. We even had a further 25% off if we opted for Thai food – bargain! The cocktails were good and strong cocktails in big pineapples. There was also Western food available which sorted out the kids.
The food was delicious, nice and spicy if you ask for it alongside incredibly beautiful sunset views.
Is Karon View Point worth it?
We are sunset chasers with sunset being our favourite time of day when travelling. Wherever we are we seek out the sunset and a viewpoint. So Kata viewpoint or Karon view point got a big thumbs up from us. The birds eye views of the beach are pretty special alone but coupled with a glorious pink sky in the evening it makes for a memorable night.
Where to stay in Kata Beach
If you are looking to stay in Kata Beach and enjoy the surfing beach, small market and Karon View Point then we highly recommend the Ozo Hotel Phuket. Especially if you are travelling as a family. Ozo Hotel Phuket has a huge splash and water park which the kids thoroughly enjoyed as well as a great pool and close proximity to the beach.
Another popular, but more luxurious resort in Kata beach is the Kata Rocks Hotel. A stunning cliffside resort that is worth splashing out on if you are looking for something special.
