Hai Van Pass by train with kids

Breath-taking train through the Hai Van Pass. A cheap, easy way to get from Hue to Da Nang.

As travellers we have always tried to incorporate a train journey in every country. Our first travelling experience as a couple was back in 2007 where we spent a summer Euro Railing and we have always loved trains ever since. We decided that travelling through the Hai Van Pass would be best by train for our family. Our hotel, The Garden Villa, in Hue organised our train tickets for us – we bought 2 first-class tickets from Hue to Da Nang leaving around 8:30am and it was about $8 per ticket. If we were to travel again I would buy 4 tickets so that we all had a seat and didn’t have to sit with a boy on each lap!

Waiting for the train at Hue

We had a little bit of a wait at Hue, the train was about 30mins late but we managed to find our seats easily. They were big, leather seats that were able to recline so we settled down quite quickly ready for the 2.5hour journey. The train had obviously been travelling through the night and most of the passengers were sleeping with the curtains drawn, a bit disconcerting as we were on the train for the views! We probably upset a few passengers by yanking open the curtains and ogling the landscape.

Beautiful views of lush mountains, green forests and coastlines.

The windows were not clear so Phil took a wander through the train trying to find some open windows to fully appreciate the view, however it wasn’t very successful so we settled to enjoy it as much as possible through the misty windows.

The long, rattling train snaking round the mountain.

The boys sat happily through the journey, we had picked up snacks and had fully-charged batteries for the ipads so it was an easy train ride for us. A car can cost about $50-60 so this was a pocket-saving, impressive journey.

Disembarking the train at Da Nang.
