During your time in Sri Lanka, make sure to include time for climbing the majestic Sigiriya Rock. An ancient rock, standing tall overlooking the area of Sigiriya. Made famous because of the breathtaking fortress built on the top. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-visit for families looking to explore one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. In our opinion, Sigirya Lion’s Rock needs to be experienced at least once.
Here’s everything you need to know about climbing Sigiriya Rock and why it’s an experience your family will never forget.

A look at Sigirya Rock’s History
But what is Lion’s Rock in Sigiriya? A UNESCO heritage site originally built in the fifth century that was rediscovered in the 19th century. This 660-foot (200-meter) tall monolith was once the site of an ancient royal palace and fortress. King Kashyapa, a Sri Lankan King from the 5th century, built this ancient fortress on top of Sigirya rock to protect himself from his brother.
The palace has impressive water gardens, murals and mirror-like walls that make it truly advanced for its time. It’s no wonder that Sigiriya Rock is often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
Climbing Sigiriya Rock Preparation
Sigiriya rock hike does come at a cost, at $36 for adults and $18 for children (over $100 for a family of 4), it did initially put me off. Sri Lanka is a very cheap country and this felt expensive. However, we knew that climbing Sigiriya rock would be something that we will only do once. So, we decided to go ahead and do it…and we were so glad we did!
Our hotel, Ehalagala Lake Resort, suggested arriving early before the heat and crowds. We arrived at Sigiriya Rock for 5.30am to do the sunrise hike. Tickets can be bought at the entrance on arrival and there are many many guides around trying to get business from you. Personally, I don’t think you need a guide at all, there is zero chance of getting lost or going the wrong way.
What to bring: wear comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, and a hat. Bring suncream, plenty of water and your camera for the incredible views. No drones are allowed on Sigiriya rock because of the swarms of wasps. Although we didn’t see any wasps up close we spotted a few nests hanging off the side of the rock.

Climbing Sigiriya Rock – Step by Step
Stage 1 – The base and water gardens
With tickets bought, you will enter the beautifully manicured lawns of the water garden with Sigiriya Lion’s Rock looming in the distance. These gardens are among the oldest surviving examples of landscape design in the world. Strolling through the manicured lawns with the amazing 200m Lion’s Rock infront of you gives a huge sense of wonder. Sigiriya Rock is such a calm, tranquil place that seeps history, awe and magic.
Stage 2 – Climbing to the Lion’s Paw
The first part of Sigiriya rock hike involves gentle steps and paths leading to the mid-level terrace where you will find the Lion’s Paw. The paws are a relic of what was a larger lion-shaped gateway, offering insight to the name Lion’s Rock.
Take some time here to stop, catch your breath and take in the views. They are pretty impressive over the jungle below. Kids will enjoy exploring the Lion’s Paws here and it’s a great opportunity for some family photos.

Stage 3 – Reaching the top
The final section involves climbing steep metal stairs that have been built into the rock face. They look a little nervewracking initially but take it slow and climbing Sigiriya rock via the metal stairs will be worth it.
Once you reach the top of Sigiriya Lion’s Rock, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The ruins of the ancient palace are scattered across the flat rock surface, with remnants of walls, pools, and foundations waiting to be explored. Make sure to spend some time walking around and looking at the different structures and ruins.
Step 4 – Coming back down
Although the hard part is done, what goes up must come down. The walk down is signficantly easier although watch for the wobbly legs on the metal stairs. On your way down, stop to look at the colorful Sigiriya frescoes, painted on the rock face. You will find ancient artwork of celestial women giving an insight into Sri Lankan art at the time.

Watch out for the monkeys at Sigiriya Rock
One of the unexpected highlights of climbing Sigiriya Rock for families is all the playful monkeys hanging around. These monkeys often dart around the base and along the path, getting up to no good. Which the kids always love to watch and laugh at. However, keep an eye on your belongings—they’re known for their cheeky attempts to grab snacks!
