Where is Assos Kefalonia?
Assos is on the North West coast of the beautiful Kefalonia island, in Greece. It is attached to the Frourio peninsula and forms a turquoise bay. Assos is a small, picturesque village with a population of around 100 people. Full of colourful houses, narrow streets and old churches, it is a town not to be missed.
What is it like in Assos?
Assos Kefalonia is home to two pebbly beaches surrounded by clear, blue sea. Small sailing boats are moored around the bay. Colourful, French style houses adorn the cliffs covered in bougainvillea. After an awful earthquake in 1953 destroyed much of Kefalonia including Assos Kefalonia, French residents sent funds over to help repair the village of Assos they loved so dearly.
How to get to Assos Kefalonia
Holidays in Kefalonia are becoming increasingly more popular so travel is pretty straightforward particularly in summer months. Kefalonia airport welcomes many budget airlines from the UK as well as other European destinations.
Alternatively you can get a ferry from the neighbouring Greek islands of Ithaca, Patras and from the mainland at Athens and Kyllini.
How to get around Kefalonia
By far the easiest way to get around Kefalonia is to hire a car. Cars can be collected at Kefalonia airport easily and reasonably. We always use Rentalcar.com for the best deals. There is a public car park in Assos Kefalonia but it can get very busy in summer months. Our advice as always, arrive early!

When is the best time to go to Kefalonia?
Kefalonia is a Mediterranean, Greek island with glorious weather! The most popular time to visit Kefalonia island is between April and October. The peak summer months can see temperatures up to mid-30s degree and the island does get busy. However, the sea breeze at the beautiful beaches of Assos, Myrtos, Fiscardo, Petani, Sami and the other wonderful beaches of Kefalonia will cool you down.
During winter months the island can get cold and lots of hotels close down, so make sure to do your research before heading to Kefalonia for some winter sun!

Things to do in Asos Kefalonia
Assos Beach Kefalonia
The number one thing to do in Assos village is simply relax and hit the beach. Grab a book, bring your towel and spend a day enjoying the sunshine and taking a break from normality. Allow yourself at least one day to simply be still and enjoy the stunning scenery.
Assos Castle Kefalonia
If you are getting itchy feet after too long relaxing at Asos beach then a trip to Assos castle is a great idea. It is quite a steep walk up a poorly maintained path but the views are worth it! The actual castle is not a paid entry museum, there is no information available which is a shame. However, view this trip as an opportunity to get the steps in. Walk to Assos castle for the views and exercise – you won’t regret it!
Eat and Drink around Assos
Assos is full of gorgeous restaurants alongside the water, some can have hefty prices so check the menus before entering. However, a cold drink after getting off the beach overlooking the sea is always appealing! Some restaurants that we can recommend are:
Platanos Restaurant Assos
This restaurant is highly rated on TripAdvisor so because of this, expect a waiting time. It offers delicious Greek food – mezze, seafood, pasta and fish. Many different options in a lovely setting. Worth checking out if you don’t mind waiting!
Sea Side Restaurant Assos
This restaurant is right on the beach and perfect for coffee, cold drinks, lunch and evening drinks. Sea Side Restaurant is casual and an ideal location on Assos beach.
Rent a Boat in Assos
If you are looking for something different to do during your time in Asos Kefalonia then why not rent a boat? Conteco are an Asos based company that hire boats out for you to go and explore some of the beautiful beaches of Kefalonia.
Explore the rest of Kefalonia Island
As beautiful as Assos is, make sure to get out and explore more of the wonderful Kefalonia island. Close-by to Kefalonia is Myrtos beach which is a beach that has won many awards for it’s cleanliness and natural beauty. Fiskardo is another similar village or town to Assos and is well worth a visit. Make sure not to miss Sami beach too which became famous for the setting of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
