A rocky mountainous area of the UAE next to a clear, blue lagoon.
We have been to Hatta a few times, it is an easy 1.5hour drive from Dubai right next to the Oman border. The weather is always a few degrees cooler and the scenery a welcome change from the bright lights and sky scrapers of Dubai.
We booked a night in the Sedr Trailers with Visit Hatta, which are around 20 renovated air-stream trailers in a trailer park on a secluded side of the infamous Hatta dam. To get to the trailers you park your car at a the Sedr Trailers car park at the foot of the dam and one of the park’s 4x4s will escort you over the mountain to your trailer.
The site is run by Meraas which is Dubai company running numerous hotels, properties and F&B outlets amongst others. The site is serviced, there is a golf buggy to take you around if required. We took my parents who are in their 70s so this was helpful for my Dad who has some slight mobility issues. There is a van where you can buy food to cook on the BBQ and a reception desk which you can call for any issues. However, you are left to your own devices and they are only on-hand if you contact them.
The site is beautiful; a rocky, open space with vans perfectly positioned to be kept private. We had 2 vans next to each other which both overlooked the dam and were completely secluded, you would have to walk right up to the outside veranda to see us.
Inside the van had a double bed which was so soft and comfortable, a small table and chairs which could be turned into a double bed for the boys, a sink and small fridge and a bathroom. There are no cooking facilities but there is a lovely BBQ pit with 4 BBQs and lots of seating in the communal area. They also put a bonfire on every night, we unfortunately missed it as the communal area became a little busy (and we are quite anti-social!) so we went back to our van to sit outside there.
At one end of the site there is some steps leading up to a viewing point where you can look over the whole of the hatta dam, the famous part where the kayaking and boating options are. We spent a while up there in the peace and tranquility watching a couple having a wedding photo shoot.
In the morning we woke up and went for a morning kayak before leaving, we called the reception and they brought the kayaks round to our side of the dam and we just had to go down a few steps to get there. We even got my 71 year old Mum out in a kayak for her first time, what a magical experience.
The site is so small yet perfectly spaced out, we didn’t really come across other people apart from during the evening BBQ time. We sat out on our terrace drinking wine and listening to music, star-gazing whilst the kids slept. It was a perfect recharging break where there is not much to do except talk, play, read and sit. An ideal road trip staycation to get away from an otherwise chaotic Dubai life.
