Quad biking through the Phuket ‘jungle’ below the big Buddha.
Since we arrived in Phuket I have heard lots of talk of ATV driving “you must go”, “your kids are old enough now, definitely do it!” and I’ve just smiled and nodded along not really having a clue what they were talking about.
What are ATVs? Quad bikes basically. 4 wheeled motorbikes I guess? Just a gear button to press to go and hand pumps for brakes like a bike, pretty simple!
We booked a driver for the day to take us around Phuket to visit some sights and he suggested going trying it. Once you have been dropped off at the place you find yourself simply going along with it and about 10mins later you are sitting with a helmet on your head trundling up a hill in the back of a tuk tuk….or that’s what happened to us anyway.
I’m so glad that’s the way the day turned out though because it was great fun. The kids sat infront of us holding onto the handle bars and felt perfectly safe. I didn’t ever feel like I was going to topple over or lose Elis, thankfully.
It took a few runs up and down a straight road to get used to the controls and then we were off following our guide through the ‘jungle’. Off-roading through well-used paths over rocks, down ditches, through mud and over rickety bridges – we loved it, gaining more and more confidence as the time went on.
Our route took us right below big Buddha, which we had just been up the top to see so it was great to view it from this angle too. Our guide was brilliant, taking loads of photos and videos as we went, there is no chance I could have taken anything as I was holding on tightly for most of it!
We opted for the 30min session which was long enough for us and the kids, my hands hurt by the end from gripping so tightly. It was 1100baht per person and Elis went free as they told us to pretend he was 4! We went with ATV and Zipline at Phuket Paradise Trip and would recommend them. We might head back for the Zipline at some point too.
A wonderful family experience that we won’t be forgetting quickly and the boys now want to do in the desert in Dubai when we can.
